Chaotic Collaboration

NEON NORTH became a duo in the rain. Spencer and Max met on a rainy night in Vancouver and connected with shared stories of heartbreak, ambition and transformation. They created an EP they’d want to listen to: driving melodies, excited drums and crushing lyrics. This EP is an expression of their realities and also their dreams, played out on the stage. Initially written entirely in midi, during a cold dark winter, the music was brought to life during spontaneous recording sessions. The EP is heart pounding and honest, because painstaking composition with the impulsiveness of a live performance.

Influenced by bands like The Strokes, Mother Mother and Metric, NEON NORTH pays homage to the sounds they love. The songs are open ended: they are stories, emotions and thoughts. The EP doesn’t tell you what to think, instead it brings you into a feeling.

Spencer is a flamenco trained guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. He studied music at Red Deer College and has played in several bands including Neon North, Danny Echo, Kieran Strange, and The Black Orchid Rebellion.

Max Avery is a producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. He has played in several bands and has most recently started producing EDM music.

The music juxtaposes calculated planning and spontaneity. The songs were painstakingly written and rewritten, peer reviewed by fellow musicians, and plotted out sound by sound, but the recording process was spontaneous, collaborative and at times even chaotic. The resulting sound is filled with energy and the careful execution of a best laid plan gone wild. The EP is a mix of hard drums, simple melodies, rich harmonies and raw vocals blended to create memorable and catchy songs.

The vocals were recorded two weeks after a breakup from a long term relationship. Some lyrics were written without a minute to spare, gun to the head style minutes before recording leaving no time for second guessing or self editing. Instead, they capture the raw emotions of heartache and passion.

The three songs on the EP are stories about people, real and imagined, for the audience to relate to. “The Fighter” is about a desperate struggle to be famous at any cost; “Stuck on Repeat” is about struggling to move on after the death of a loved one; “Traffic Lights” is searching for a grain of guidance and comfort in the midst of a breakup.
